Las Nubes, or "Cloud", is a beautiful farm located on the slopes of Volcan Actenango, facing the city of Antigua. The farm became a coffee plantation in the early 1970’s and is run by the Echeverria family. Humidity at this farm is slightly higher than normal due to its proximity to the coast. This humidity causes coffee to ripen earlier, leading to a unique cupping profile. The coffee is milled in Finca Capetillo which is also owned and run by the family.
PROCOCER grew out of the Nicaraguan Small Farmers and Ranchers Union (UNAG) initiative to provide intensive technical assistance to individual, organic coffee producers in the municipalities of Jícaro, Murra, Ciudad Antigua, San Fernando y Jalapa. From that first experience, 150 participants decided to continue working collectively and establish their own organization. PROCOCER members held their first general assembly in October 1999 and the Cooperativa de Servicios Multiples was formally registered.
Ratu Ketiara Gayo (RKG) is the Ketiara group’s newest business unit: a women’s cooperative established in 2017 and co-lead by three of Ms. Rahmah’s young protégés: Ms. Indayana as chairwoman; Ms. Dini as quality control; and Ms. Murul Kemala as treasurer. RKG represents a younger generation of farmers, 971 in total, 80% of whom are women, and all of whom are focused on top quality. Together RKG members farm a total of 1,234 hectares of coffee.
Costa Rica is a truly unique country, hosting more than 5% of the world’s biodiversity even though its landmass only takes up .03% of the planet’s surface. Around 25% of the country’s land area is in protected national parks and protected areas, which gives it the largest percentage of protected areas in the world.
